Olympia will become the center of the world yet again on April 21. This year, The Travel Insiders will be there as the torch in ancient Olympia is lit for the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. It will then travel to South America for the very first time. The Olympic Flame Lighting Ceremony 2016 will take place at the site of Ancient Olympia, a sacred place for the Greeks of old and a popular destination for citizens of the world.
The Flame Lighting Ceremony has acted as herald for the Olympic Games worldwide. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece.
Women dressed in archaic-style clothing, representing the priestesses of Hestia, will perform at the Temple of Hera where god Apollo will light the torch. It will then be carried all over the world and end up at the Maracanã Stadium, the Olympic Stadium for the Rio Olympiad. The Sacred Flame burns for as long as the Olympic Games last; as a strong reminder of the land that gave birth to them.
Live this mystic ritual with us, The Travel Insiders, by taking a sneak peek of the dress rehearsal the day before. It is the only opportunity for the visitor to witness the ceremony from close up, just a breath away from the beautiful priestesses.
